Robert Schlauger, of Grand Junction, passed away on August 8, 2017 at St. Mary's Hospital, surrounded by family. He was 85.
Robert was born in Olathe, Colorado to Henry and Katherine (Kneiss) Schlauger on February 1, 1932. He was the youngest of eleven siblings. He spent his childhood in Nebraska and attended school there, where he also helped work the family farm and in young adulthood, care for his parents. In 1955, Robert moved to Grand Junction, Colorado. He married Eleanor C. Appelhanz on June 1, 1957 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage this year. They had one daughter, Beverly.
Robert had a tremendous work ethic, providing for his family as a union sheet metal worker and instructor. He has been a member of the Sheet Metal Workers' International Association Local Union No. 9 for the last 50 years. He was a natural at everything he picked up. As a handyman, he could fix most anything. He could often be found working in his yard or tending to his animals. He had a tender heart for all animals, especially his horses. In his free time he also enjoyed playing the steel electric guitar or harmonica, and fishing.
Robert is survived by his wife, Eleanor; daughter, Beverly Garver; sister Lydia Eisenach; granddaughters, Melanie Heath and Michelle (Cory) Welch, all of Grand Junction; as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents and siblings; Christina, Hank, John, Phil, Jake, Manual, Walter, Carl, and Herbert.
Robert's funeral service will be held Wednesday, August 16 at 10:00 am at Martin Mortuary. A committal service will follow at Orchard Mesa Cemetery. He would ask that those who knew him not be sad for him, but know that he is at peace. Friends and family may leave their condolences at www.martinmortuary.com.
